If my guess that you are travelling all the way from Virginia, USA, is
correct, then I would have thought that a visit to Athens should be a must.
It is after all there that the Acropolis is, where democracy was invented,
where Socrates, Plato and Aristotle taught, where Aeschylus, Sophocles,
Euripides, Aristophanes et al wrote their plays. In my simplistic way of
thinking, Athens is the cradle of western civilisation.
And it's got the Acropolis, the symbol of Europe.
This is not to say a word against Thessalonica, a place that I have heard
many good reports about, and somewhere that I'm hoping to visit too.
Let me just repeat what others have already said: don't try to cram too much
into your 12 days' break. It might exhaust you more than you had bargained
for.
