Default Feta

Has anyone seen the news story recently about the Greeks stopping everyone
but themselves from making Feta? It's somthing to do with a protection or
origin order or something like that. Similarly Champagne has to come from
the Champagne region of France and Cornish Pasties have to be made in
Cornwall.

Apparently Feta is only supposed to be made in one part of Greece. I didn't
know that. Which part of Greece is it?

There is a company that makes Feta cheese in Yorkshire. They call it
Yorkshire Feta and don't pretend that it has come from Greece. They are
planning to carry on making it whatever happens. There is a lot of Feta made
in Denmark and Germany apparently.

Perhaps we in Yorkshire should ban everyone else from making Yorkshire
puddings - we're the only ones that know how to make them anyway!

Yes, why shouldn't they? I wasn't saying that they shouldn't.

No is the time to register the brand name "I can't believe it's not Feta!".

Just a thought.

I thought that ruling came into effect a while ago, but I just got the feta
we're having for our tea (with salad, tsatsiki and crunchy bread) out of the
fridge and apparently it was made in Germany!

Jeremy,

The situation with Wensleydale cheese is a bit complex. There was no-one
making cheese in Wensleydale at one time, as all the factories had closed.
So it was being made in Lancashire (of all places!). Now a small outfit has
opened up in Wensleydale again.

I thought is EU joke was burried years ago. The Greek government wanted Feta
to be a protected greek product. In fact Denmark is the biggest producer and
exporter of Feta - especially to the middle east.
Anyway - another joke in this connection is, that recogniced dictionairies
disribe the greek word feta (slice) as dirived from the italian fetuccini -
so much for greek origin.
PS: do NOT mention this to your greek friends. They are mostly a bit touchy
about evrything "greek".

Said a happy-go-lucky Dane :o)

Good job the Greeks don't retaliate and produce Samso cheese (sorry, can't
get the spelling correct here).

Cognac, Parma ham, Champagne - this could be quite a long list. Even the
Danes recognise that they are making a Greek cheese called Feta. And some of
them are soooooo proud of this fact that they make a song and dance about it
on a Greek travel discussion forum.

Henry.
