Graham,
I know Aviday says that you will get lots of responses as everyone has their
favourite island, but having thought about it my vast experience of Greek
Islands says there are not many places that will match your requirements.
This is because watersports tend to be in places that are commercial and
busy, and the smaller islands, because they are small don't have much in the
way of sightseeing.
You might be better finding somewhere that is quiet but with a beach that
has watersports not too far away, and if you have two teens then they will
probably want to be let off the leash some of the time, if they are old
enough, so I am thinking about places that have a decent bus service so that
they can get about easily.
Crete springs to mind for sightseeing but the resorts are long distances
apart so for watersports you would have to stay somewhere commercial/busy.
Aviday's suggestion about Naxos is a good one. The town is not
overcommercialised and there is the nearby St George's beach that is a
popular watersports type place. Within a bus ride there are long stretches
of quiet sandy beach around Aghia Anna. You could also stay in Aghia Anna if
you want somewhere quiet and visit Naxos town by bus/taxi when you wanted
to. There is an interesting old town and the island is big enough to tour
around.
Another island that springs to mind is Skiathos, provided you stay at one of
the 'resorts' outside Skiathos Town. The 'resorts' are all small clusters of
accommodation/tavernas/bars, not real villages, so they are not very big.
There are lots of beaches of all persuasions, some with watersports and some
quiet ones, all within a 30 minute bus ride and the buses are very frequent.
Skiathos Town is a lively place, particularly in the evening. The one
drawback is that there is not a lot of sightseeing although there is a small
monastery, the old kastro (very small), and various boat trips (around the
island and to other islands). You could of course visit other islands from
here - Skopelos and Alonissos are within an hour's hyrdorfoil ride.
No doubt others will not agree with me, and have other ideas.
