It is an "isolated" and "pure" island because you cannot get there by
island - hopping or by chance. There is only one bus per day from
Athens to Kymi beach and one and only ship waiting there to take you
to Skyros.
It is not a party island, but still a place where you can have lots of
fun
The architecture of the town is unique.
It is ideal for families and children (and surfers and beach bums too)
It is deserted in May, June and September and kind of crowded in
August because of the families of Skyrian of Athens returning home
during their summer leaves.
In August the visitors from abroad are few compared to the Greeks and
the Skyrian of Athens.
In winter there are only 2000 people on the island.
April and October are the most romantic seasons to visit Skyros, but
the sea is cold, so forget swimming.
The beach downhill the city is magnificent, the sand and the water is
excellent and the beach bar at "magazia" a place where all the young
people of the island meet from 15.00 to 19.00. The beach and the bar
are quite "deserted" in the morning.
There are many secluded beaches for hermits and naturalists, even one
for nudists but the real fun for me is in the Skyros town itself and
the main beach downhill.
My most favorite place is the kafenio (traditional coffe serving
establishment and place of gambling in winter) of barba Yiannis on the
main "street" (especially after 8 o clock in the evening, when you can
watch all the people going up and down"
The best tavern, the tavern of Margetis but there are many more.
Visiting the castle and the St George's monastery is a must and the
view from there is spectacular.
If you are a family you will probably want to return. |
