There are no more boats between St Pete and Tallinn or St Pete and Helsinki
since Jan. 1, because the russians increased their harbour fees so much,
that business has stopped. There are several daily bus services between St
Pete and Helsinki, also night busses. One-way fare for foreigners is ca 50
euros, but if you speak russian and are ready to bargain try your luck with
the drivers. Usually people pay 10-20 euros o/w. The biggest problem is
that different bus companies use different departure points in St. Pete.
Quite many use the city bus terminal (avtobusnyi vokzal) at Naberezhnaya.
Obvodnogo kanala 36. It's a bit out from the centre, so use a taxi to get
there.
Trains are faster, but there are no night trains, only early morning and
late afternoon departures from St Pete. Second cl ticket o/w is ca 50 euros.
Boat fares from Helsinki to Tallinn start from 15 euros o/w (Tallink).
Get your visa to Russia in time. Most probably visa fees are going to be the
most expensive item on your trip from London to St Pete and back. Tourist
visas require purchase of accommodation in hotel or hostel, so it might be a
good idea to search them simultaneously. |
