Default Long layover at Gatwick

Unless I can find an alternate schedule, my wife and I will have almost a
13-hour daylight layover next April at Gatwick, en route from the U.S. to
Toulouse. I am pondering renting a car and spending about 8 hours somewhere
in the vicinity of the airport. Please suggest likely attractions, villages
and drives within a reasonable distance from the airport, avoiding motorways
and congested lesser roads.

Another possibility is to take the train into central London. It takes
about half an hour to Victoria Station.

I strongly recommend the Gatwick Express and London Tube as your
transportation of choice to see anything decent in the time you have.
Make sure you factor in enough time to get back to the airport and
consider a Plan B for your return on the off chance you need it.
