| | Guest | Hotel i Florence Hi I need recommendations and comments of hotels in centro storico of
Florence or the Oltrarno. Single male. Good walker. Under 150 Euro, if
possible. Has any reader stayed at Instituto Gould? billfrogg

I was happy with the Hotel Casci. Very central, not luxurious but
comfortable, and well under 150 Euro.

the Pensione Analena which is on Via Romana just across from the entrace
to the Boboli gardens is a traditional old place just a tad off the
beaten track of tourism and quite charming -- the balcony looks out over
a nice garden and there are plenty of restaurants bars etc close by --
and it is an easy stroll into the Centro Storico [the problem with
being right in the Centro is that it is truly a giant zoo of tourists
24/7 -- We stayed near Analena last summer and near Santa Croce this
summer and the difference in ambience is substantial -- you can't take a
step in the center without being surrounded by tour groups --

I know we have had this conversation before -- but while I found the
Casci decent and the people who run it are very nice, have lots of
guidebooks etc, it is still quite charmless and overpriced IMHO compared
to similar hotels. | |

I certainly agree about it being charmless, but that apparently
bothered me less than it did you.
Overpriced? I can't remember exactly what I paid for it, but I
thought the price was reasonable--certainly well under the 150
Euro he set as a maximum. I don't have enough experience with
similar hotels to make a comparison, but if I were going back to
Florence soon, I wouldn't necessarily rule out other
recommendations, but the Casci would be my first choice.

Don't know what to recommend but we were not very happy with the Hotel
Balcony. YMMV.

well duh -- people travel when they can [amazing concept I know] and if
you want to be in Florence then staying in a cool lovely villa in the
suburbs doesn't get it -- one presumably goes to Florence because of its
fabulous renaissance art -- which is lamentably abscent in the sticks
it is still possible to locate oneself in a pleasant less tourist
overrun part of town -- just past Via Romana up the hill towards the
piazza over looking Florence are a number of lovely 4 star hotels set in
gardens that are quiet and charming -- Analena is considerably closer
and cheaper | |

wel, yuk huk, why not go to Orlando cuz they got a good themepark there
-- instead of Florence -- or why not go to Viena instead of Florence --
and since New York city is so hot and crowded -- well why not go to
Albany instead?
