Default Where to buy Euros in the UK ?

Any bank, most travel agents, most post offices except perhaps the very
smallest. Advance ordering is required for "obscure" currencies but
anywhere that does foreign exchange should have euro in stock.

I always go to Marks and Spencer. They almost always have the best rates and
no commision. Don't go to Thomas Cook. I would hesitate to use ATMs abroad
after my last trip when I changed £150 worth of foreign currency and my
bank(RBS) charged me £7, this despite the ATM saying that I wouldn't be
charged for the transaction.

The only UK institution I know of that definitely doesn't charge for
foreign ATM withdrawals is the Nationwide Building Society. I make
ATM withdrawals all over Europe with my Nationwide debit card and it's
great: never any problem, never any charge, and extremely good
inter-bank exchange rates.

I agree about Marks & Spencer: if I need money before I go, I get it
from M&S. The exchange rate is generally about as good as you can get
over the counter in the UK.

In my bank, you have to order any foreign currency, including Euro. Even at
places like Thomas Cook, it is advisable to order - lots of other people
assume they can just walk in and buy Euro without giving the exchange bureau
advance warning and they can run out.

I haven't come across that, but maybe I've been lucky.

Good advice, particularly if you are in a place with only one or two
bureaux.
