Default luggage on the tgv ?

Hi,
We have travelled in Europe before but are newbies to train travel.
We plan to fly into Degaulle, and the catch the tgv to say Avignon or
somewhere further south (we understand the train leaves from the airport)
How does one handle luggage on trains - we will have a good size suitcase
each (on wheels so carrying is not a problem).

We would appreciate any comments please

(I am just starting to research timetables etc, and would love to know a
good site - the ones I have tried so far are just all pop up adds.

Thanks
Trevor

There is a free bus shuttle from the airport to the railroad station

There is a place above travellers' heads in the TGV to put one's luggage...
But it may be difficult if your cases are really big. What are their
dimensions ?
There used to be more convenient place to put big luggage in the entrance of
every car in the TGV but because of the recent terrorist red alert its use
is now forbidden :(

If you are travelling a week day there will probably be some empty space
whatever the size of your suitcase is...

There are racks above the seats for luggage.

Perhaps a more accurate way to put this is that the TGV station at
Degaulle is on the airport grounds. One of the regular free shuttle
routes makes a stop at the train station.

When you exit the terminal, look for signs at the curb about bus routes.
There are approximately three routes. As best as I recall, two of those
routes go to parking garages; the third makes a loop around all of the
lettered terminals in addition to the TGV station. I *believe* you'll
want route number 2, but do check!!

As of a year ago, large bags went on racks at the entrance to each car. I
can't believe that this has been discontinued, as not only is there nowhere
else to stow anything large, it is impossible to get them through many of
the cars, due to stops and narrow passageways.

I made it to the train with only seconds to spare, so was forced to leave my
bag in a different car from my assigned seat. I was lucky as there were no
stops before my destination, Lyon, so I didn't have a problem with this.
Normally, there is a display showing the layout of the train, so you know
where to stand for your own car ("voiture").

If you have any questions, you can call SNCF at 33.8.92.35.35.39 (outside
France, 33.08... inside), and get an english-speaking operator. You can
also buy your tickets (less expensive than doing it through an agent) and
they will mail them to you.

All these racks are currently sealed out of use for "security reasons"

So what do you do with your bags? I can't imagine where else they could be
put, except on an empty seat. And there aren't always many of those!
Unless people have stopped bringing bags at all.

you carry it on and if it is large it probably only fits at the ends of
cars where there are usually racks. on short haul trips [many stops] it
is risky to have it there without chaining it to the rack -- on long
haul trains like Eurostar it is less a problem.

You will have to lift it up the steps onto the train and then hoist it
into overhead racks [if it will fit -- often a larger suitcase does not]
or hoist it onto end racks.

in overnight compartments -- luggage is kept in the compartments --

But the statement has been made that the racks are closed for 'security'
reasons. I guess that you just sit on your bags in the aisles. FFM

Don't ask me I didn't seal them up! Strangely, nor was it me who scared the
authorities into doing so. But when I travel in France, my luggage is small
enough to go on my lap or under my legs, so if I am in my seat I use the
overhead racks. Unless I want to sleep I usually travel in the bar anyway -
good views of both sides of the tracks.

As it happens, I didn't go on a TGV that was anything like half full on my
last trip, but I would think it could be chaotic!

Tony
