| | Guest | Ireland We are going to the Republic or Ireland in July 2004. Being Americans, we
don't want to drive on the left side of the road, so renting a car is not a
good option. We'll arrive in Dublin and want to go to Cork, Ring of Kerry,
the usual tourist things. Other than renting a car, how can we see the
sights?
Thanks.

| | Guest | Ireland I got used to driving on the left hand side fairly quickly. You have to
be very carefull but it's not a very difficult transition.
Maybe it's because I'm Canadian though.

| | Guest | Ireland You are going to miss a lot of Ireland if you do not rent a car. It is not as
difficult as you think. The transportation system in Ireland leaves much to be
desired so I would think twice before you reject the idea of driving in
Ireland.

Agreed. And if, after thinking twice, you still incline against hiring
a car, think for a third time.
Besides, it's easier than you might think to make the adjustment
because we all drive down the middle of the road.

Gee, you Americans are so cute. How do you come up with saying
something like that out loud;)

It IS a sort of extra risk for folks who have always made driving on the
right side. I discovered in 1986 when in Ireland that typically drivers
didn't bother to turn on lights even when it was getting very dark. Roads
are typically very narrow and winding. | |

That's a very snotty reply. All the original poster meant was that being
American, he drives on the right side of the road and is uncomfortable
with adjusting to the left. There's nothing wrong with that statement.
It's not assuming anything about being inherently American. Don't be so
sensitive. | |

Gary, Reconsider and rent a car. Driving on the other side of the road is
easy.
Drive just like you do in Atlanta, you the driver are next to the center line,
same way in Ireland, you just happen to get in the car on the other side.
Don't think about left and right just get next to the center line. I rented a
car in Ireland in June and drove for three weeks with no problem.
Highly recommend the Dingle Peninsula. I enjoyed it more than the Ring of
Kerry.

| | Guest | Ireland Only way to go. We usually rent out car from Hertz, last year we rec'd a very
good price. The B&Bs in Ireland are very good and you should have no problem
getting one as they are numerous. We usually land in Shannon. We find the West
Coast of Ireland the best for gorgeous scenery and wonderful people. From
Dingle in the Southwest to Donegal in the Northwest, it is a lovely trip.
Unfortunately, we won't be visiting Ireland this May because of illness. Have
a wnderful time! Nan | |
