| | Guest | Crete Am trawling websites etc. with little success.
Married couple, 60 from UK - but not slouches, honest! We're normally in the
deserts at this time of year, if it wasn't for the current ........
Looking at Crete (about which we currently know very little), 2 weeks,
mid-October.
Mainly want to see Knossos and 'that gorge' (South of Chania, can't remember
the name - a day's hike through, boat back, etc.). And, then, to
'experience' Crete.
We're looking for a small town resort, large enough to have plenty of its
own day & night life (not Faliraki style!) so we can actively enjoy those
mooching days, but small enough to have retained genuine 'Creteness' and not
to be a major package resort. Working harbour/castle sort of centre?
Re our two main aims, maybe mid-way along northern coast somewhere?
Any thoughts? Any actual small hotel/self catering recommendations naturally
also appreciated.
Many thanks. | |

| | Guest | Crete You may find that Crete is rather seasonal to tour companies and that the
season runs from May to October. The Gorge near Ghania does not open to
visitors until late May but I do not know when it closes.

Knossos is ... I suppose the word is 'interesting'. As an inveterate vistor
of old stones, I preferred Malia and Phaistos. If you want to travel around
the island, choose somewhere near the centre of the island to stay. We
stayed a bit to the east of Malia and it was a long drive to the Samia
Gorge. Getting about half-way down the steps into the gorge put Barbara off
going any further. I'd been put off before we left by the idea of walking
that far.

It is a few years since I was last there, but the south was then less
touristy than the north. Access to the popular sites is, however, more
difficult from there.
