I stayed in the Prinsen several years ago. I had to change rooms
after the first night as Vondelstraat is a run for taxis all night and
it was very noisy. It didn't help that some pillock across the hall
set the alarm in his/her room to go off at about 2:00 in the morning.
Several of us were getting worried after a while about the welfare of
the occupant and it took several calls to get security to come and
investigate. It turned out the room was empty at the time which
was why the alarm was not turned off.
Not a good introduction to the hotel. However the room to which I
moved for the rest of my stay , which was right at the back, was OK.
It was small but comfortable. ( Despite daily requests at reception I
never did get a plug for the basin in the bathroom and had to make do
with stuffing tissues into the plughole all during my stay).
The staff were very friendly and there was an adequate buffet
breakfast. The hotel cat was also friendly and provided endless
amusement especially watching it negotiate the very steep iron stairs
down to the garden.
I think there are better hotels in Amsterdam for the money. However
they say they have recently renovated and extended so perhaps it is
much better now.
I don't do noise, so personally I prefer the Nicolaas Witsen which is
in Nicolaas Witsenstraat, just off Weteringschans. It is in a much
quieter location, has better ensuite facilities and there is parking
outside if you need it. The staff there are also very friendly and
helpful.
