I have made reservations (at a good rate) at the Atrium Best Western for
October.
I am getting mixed messages as to the location being central. If I
can be assured of easy access to Walking Tours, sights, etc....and
safety, I will probably keep the reservation. Any and all suggestions
are appreciated. Thanks , Ruth

you'll be a few blocks from the main train station. i believe alot of the
walking tours originate there. in munich, i usually stay in the area and am
very happy with the location. i would consider it central.

It sounds as if you are a single woman concerned about her saftey.
Munich is a very safe town. However, as a female, I personally am not
comfortable walking around the area around the Hauptbahnhof at night.
I personally would stay downtown - at the Torbräu or Platzl or
something else in the Altstadt if I were you. If the tours depart
from the Hauptbahnhof, it's a short walk or U-bahn up the street to
them.

Walking: The old centre with Marienplatz, Hofbrauhaus, museums, Isar
river etc. is too fa to walk. The hotel is 2 blocks south of main
station. It's in a gap between subway stations, but tourists usually
prefer street cars in the center anyway. They pass by every few
minutes and stop often, the system is really user friendly. No ticket
control bars or so. Just step in thru any door and ride as long as you
like. You will probably buy a some-days-pass for all public transport
which is the best way to get everywhere.

Safety: Between main station and this hotel you will find Munich's red
light district, which is not really a big success. Some special
interest cinemas between hotels and computer stores. Anything beyond
has been banned and moved out of town decades ago.
It's a safe area with wide streets (I guess there are no really unsafe
areas in Munich).

whoa - just checked the Platzl's rates & they have really gone up -
sorry for that advice. Have some others you might want to check that
are very central, safe & charming - 'An der Oper' - right on the
Operaplatz & above the Spatenhaus - fantastic location!; the Splendid
right up from there on Maximillianstrasse - very charming hotel &
well-priced for how elegant it is (beautiful patio for breakfast if
the weather is nice); for a huge price (& amenities) drop, the Am
Markt is right on Viktualienmarkt in the heart of the Altstadt & very
(shabbily) charming, yet safe.
