What do you mean by "affordable"? If you give a price range perhaps
someone can make a recommendation.

In Soho since it will be difficult to find a place that is quiet
and/or affordable. Kensington is nice but tends to be expensive. As
for Hyde Park, look in the area to the north, i.e. Bayswater and
Paddington. Of the three areas you mention Bayswater is most likely
to meet your stated criteria.

Some factors:
1. London is a leading business capital of the world and caters to huge
numbers of business travellers who, traditionally, are less price conscious
than tourists (company pays etc).
2. Traditional dominance of US/Japanese/Middle Eastern visitors, who are
prepared to pay good money for accommodation.
3. Cost of properties (real estate) is prohibitive (one of the highest in
the world), particularly in the West End and the City.
4. Most hotels are company-run with huge overheads. In Paris, many smaller
hotels are family-run with favourable tax treatment (e.g. VAT of 8% against
19%).
5. Lastly, traditionally Britons have put up with high prices. To ask for a
discount was considered bad manners. This is changing, however, with
'rip-off' Britain campaign.
6. In the current business climate, only those with more money than sense
pay rack rates. Trawling the net and asking hotels directly for discount,
you can find some good deals, like 4-star room for £50.

Soho and quiet are contradictions in terms as is Hyde Park and affordable
and Kensington can be a little expensive too

You can find rooms in Kensington for around £75-90, the Holland Court Hotel
for example

In Earls Court you can find a decent single for around £50 , the Kensington
International
for example

Personally I usually stay in the Ibis on Cardington Street near Euston
Its pretty decent, very close to Euston Station and underground and
there are plenty of pubs and eateries nearby. Its a little more expensive
at £80 per night and its a 2* but pretty decent and better value than the
nearby 3* Euston Thistle
