I was on one of those really long DC escalators with a friend who is
squeamish about heights. She was beginning to get really panicky before
we got to the bottom. I don't know if it was the power of suggestion,
but it began to get to me, too.

| | Guest | Please Recommend Good Places to Climb Stairs I climbed the Statue of Liberty, all the way to the torch. That was
more than 40 years ago; I don't know whether you can still do it (but
I know *I* can't!).
The campanile in Florence -- they have a sign warning you not to do it
if you have heart trouble. I do, but went anyway, and was rewarded
with a magnificent view of the dome of the cathedral, and of the
city.....
I've also done the Vatican, Cologne Cathedral, Washington Monument ...
I think you can do the Eiffel Tower by stairs, but I've always taken
the elevator.... | |

The pyramids of the Moon and the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico.
From the train station to Machu Pichu, Peru. Probably not even the
locals do that (beware of height sickness).
Sigiriya, Sri Lanka.
Temples near Guilin, and many others in China.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge walk ? | |

| | Guest | Please Recommend Good Places to Climb Stairs On Thu, 10 Jul 2003 14:16:58 GMT, in .europe, carole@caroleallen.com (Carole
Allen) arranged some electrons, so they looked like this :
... The first part of St. Peter's is elevator, then it's 300+ steps to the
... top - I climbed it in 1995
...
... Giotto's is 440+ steps - I climbed it in 1998
...
... My recollection is St. Paul's is 500 some steps...more than Giotto's,
... ..I climbed it in 1995
...
... I climbed a portion of the EiffelTower in 1995 (not all the way to the
... top) - don't remember if it wasn't allowed or if I just pooped out
... that time
As far as I remember you can climb the stairs up to the second floor. Taking the lift to
go down is free. | |

The first time I was at the Great Wall, I noticed the same thing. Even
worse, the stairs were very crowded and people were pushing, and I was
afraid of being pushed over the edge. It was one of the few times in my
life I was really afraid.
As far as making multiple visits to the Great Wall, when I was an
official visitor, multiple times to the same agency, they took you
there, and it was hard to get out of it. I once suggested going to a
different part of the wall (anything but Badaling), but no luck.

Mr. Clast, a double-post simply to add a signature is a wee bit naughty,
but I guess you enjoy breaking the rules.
