Default Hotels in France seem to be closed in SEptember?

As an elderly pair, we quite often drive around France in September staying
in small family run hotels such as the Logis chain.
This year we have found it a bit more difficult to book hotels in September
there seems to be quite a few that are closed for 6 weeks or so.

Is this a new phenomenon in France or is that we have not noticed it before
Don

NO!! I'm referring to Hotels, I never stay in Gites and have not
"web-searched" for their availability in September..
