Höh! Not so long ago I drove from Helsinki via Varkaus to Joensuu and
further to Koli, Kuusamo, Inari, Lakselv, Alta, Enontekiö and down the
Swedish east coast to Stockholm and then back home. Around 4000 kilometres
in just five days. | |

Wasn't that a bit tiring? You must have been driving most of the time.

Totally agree. Never more than 200 per day, 150 is better.

What should a man do when he doesn't understand something?
A trucker has a load frozen goods to be delivered from Stockholm to Nantes.
He should spend three or four weeks on route to make it a pleasure?

Depends on the sort of frozen goods!

I don't care what truckers do.
The subject of this thread concerns travel on holiday - presumably
for pleasure only.

No. I don't admit I am provoking. In the same fashion a bloke from Seattle
wants to cruise to Puerto Vallarta. To see the world a bit. The shortest
path between the origin and the destination is around 4300. If there is only
a month or so to be on the road, there about must be full day rides (I
assume some desert stretches would be a bit dull anyways). Naturally such
cruises aren't made for families with small children.
If you lived far apart from Portugal and Spain and you are willing to drive
there, it makes thousands after thousands of kilometres when you start from
as remote a place as Helsinki. Something unavoidable by car. Naturally there
are options. For instance one can buy a two way flight ticket to Madrid and
rent a vehicle there. If the Iberian peninsula was of the major interest
this is an option to consider. If you wanted to see things in between and
you want to carry lots of stuff, the rented car sounds less attractive. One
can also consider train travelling but then the gear must be very slim line.

I just wanted to see the light nights of Lapland and I had an opportunity in
early May. Place to place in Norway there still was lots of snow. Roads were
clear of snow and ice everywhere but momentarily in Kuusamo where it did
sleet heavily.

No problem. Fastest road was from Helsinki to Heinola where the speed limit
is 120 but I drove something like 90-100km/h. Roads in Norway was so windy
that typically the speed was 80 km/h or less. In the Swedish east coast the
limit was around 100. | |
