| | Guest | Europe Trip-Mid Aug Hallo,
I'll be traveling throughout Europe mid August through late Sept. A
few of the stops include Spondon UK, Perstorp Sweden , Lanaken Belgium
and Budapest.
I've never been to any of these locales before, though I have traveled
throughout Europe pretty extensively (Spain, France, Andorra, Italy).
Does anyone have any thoughts on the above 4 sites? Budapest should
be a hoot from what I heard, but I don't have a clue about the first
3.

Didn't you go to Budapest last autumn? ;)
Spondon is a suburb of Derby, a rather dull industrial city in the
north of England. However, it's located within easy driving distance
of some terrific wilderness areas in the Peak District and Derbyshire
Dales as well as quaint small towns like Matlock and historic sites
like Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. So, perhaps not a magnetic place in
itself but a good base.
Perstorp looks to me like it's not too far from Malmo, one of the more
interesting cities in Sweden - and actually that means Copenhagen,
which for my money is one of the loveliest small cities in Europe, is
easy too. The historic city of Helsingborg is also close by.
No idea about Lanaken, I'm afraid. The nearest big place, Maastricht,
struck me as unexciting.
In Budapest I strongly recommend the badly-named House of Terror if
you're interested in recent history.

I will be in Spondon on a Mon-Wed, flying into Manchester and driving
to Spondon. Will this most likely be fatal? I've budgeted 2 hours,
workable? Is there a train I could take?
Perstorp looks to me like it's not too far from Malmo, one of the

I fly into Copenhagen and drive to Perstorp. The same questions
apply, can it be done safely? Are there any trains?
No idea about Lanaken, I'm afraid. The nearest big place, Maastricht,

I fly into Maastricht, but apparently it's only 10 mins from Lanaken
so I don't imagine I could get that lost.
I am planning on driving from Lanaken to Frankfurt, a 3 hour, cross
country trip. The flight is an hour and by the time I make it to and
from the airports I figure just drive. Are there trains available for
this leg?
In Budapest I strongly recommend the badly-named House of Terror if
you're interested in recent history.
Possibly. I'm there 3 days and I'm desparately trying to convince my
better half to meet me there and take a jaunt to Vienna. I hear it's
maybe a half hour away. Are you familar with the "speed trains"? If
so, do they run from Barcelona to Hungary?

Your post should have had SPOILER in the subject.

Yeah, I'm pretty convinced I'll do the driving. Particularly since no
foriegn language will create additional hurdles on this leg fo the
trip. My notes reflect that it's 88 miles, are these roads "highways"
in the sense we have them in the states?
Also, I'll fly out of Manchester to Copenhagen that Weds, is there
still a 2 hour early arrival requirement even though these are EU
countries?
Thks again. | |

I assume so, yes, though my notes say "Derby"

Take your own advice, peanut. This isn't paid advice, and you're not
obligated to use it. If you want to see what the various roads in
Europe look like, open a couple of browser windows and use Google Maps
(maps.google.com) to compare overhead views of the road networks you're
used to with the routes you're planning to use overseas. You'll find
more similarities than differences along the main routes (other than
the obvious difference of left-hand road rules in the UK).

I never claimed such a thing. I stated (correctly) that there is no
single easy way to do high-speed rail travel between Barcelona and
Budapest. It requires several changes of trains. In between, it's
nearly a given that there will be travel segments of at least four
hours; the entire voyage takes more than a day. It's the kind of
trip that requires a bit of planning, including purchasing seat
reservations. These days, it's easier to fly instead, but that may
change in the near future.

Well I'm in Texas, so a typical highway here is 5 or 6 lanes, with
SUVs going apprx 70-80 mph!

In that case, no. :-)
2-3 lanes of Fiat 500s doing 90-100mph.
