Default Question: Italy in August

Hello. I'm trying to plan a trip for late August or early September to
either Italy or Ireland.

I've heard that August is a bad time to go since a lot of businesses--
particularly smaller shops and restaurants--will be closed. Does
anybody have any personal experience with this? Do thing get better on
September 1st, or are businesses still on vacation?

- C.W.

August is the traditional holiday month for Europeans.

In Italy, normally, last week of August all business will reopen, so not
all month is holiday.
In touristic areas hotels and restaurants are all open (if they don't do
business in August...)
....but August, at least the first 3 weeks, have higher prices and less
chance to find available rooms.
I think that late August and September are very good times to visit Italy.
Still good weather: hottest months are June and July, the second half of
August temperatures are slightly lower and the chances to find some
thunderstorm that will give some refresh are higher.
Also more chance to find business (hotel, campings, restaurants and
similar) still open in holiday places (the holiday summer season
normally stops after the middle of September).
October is very good to visit towns, but the sea, except far south
(Sicily) is not very good.

Ciao, Piero.
