We used the Metro to get to Nevsky Prospekt, although we were advised
against it by the tour company guide, and walked a lot when we got there.

I would consider the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Church of the Saviour on
the Blood, and the cruiser Aurora as essential. The amber room was something
of a disappointment, probably because nothing could live up to the hype.
However, we found that, after about three or four days, all the restored
palaces looked the same.

by the way.. most of the historical buildings in St Peterburg are due to to
the Architect Rastrelli and his family. He was from Vicenza and built also
the Kremlin and many different buildings in the Baltic States.
Having lived most of his life in Russia. Russians say he was a russian of
Italian origin..
