When I first moved to the Netherlands two of us sat at a table outside what we
thought was a hotel/restauarnt but was in fact at that time the house of the
Baron of Wassenaar. If we hadn't asked "the waiter" for a menu, I think we could
have spent the whole afternoon drinking there. I did something similar in Italy
ten years ago but we were rumbled by the owner, just as we were complaining
that the service was as bad as in NL.

For those on a budget it could make a difference.

I quite like Hostaria Nerone near the Colosseum in Rome. Each time we went
everything seemed cheaper per unit. Mind you, the three of us were ordering
platters of offal, drinking buckets of wine and entertaining the owners'
children while the adults ate after closing time. They asked if we'd rather
have a free carafe instead of the limoncello.
Cheers,

I've been offered an after-meal brandy only in Spanish restaurants (as in
cuisine; I've never been to Spain). And it's always been Spanish brandy,
even in Cambodia.

We've been to that very place (by chance) in October '07. I can really
recommend it, they have lots of different ice creams and you don't pay more
than at any "normal" ice cream parlour in italy. They also do small snacks
like sandwiches and pizza. Nice place.

Those who get fleeced subsidise the rest of us.

Nobody has ever asked us if we had coffee in St Mark's Square.
