I've traveled around Iceland on a bus for a week a number of years
ago, and I think that time is about right, but if you want to spend
more time in remote areas (probably camping) you could take longer.
There's really not that many places to stop at. When I was there in
2000 the ring road wasn't completely paved, but was in acceptable
shape to drive on. I mainly preferred the eastern part of Iceland,
from Höfn to Seydisfjordur. Dettifoss Waterfall (there are also
several other nice waterfalls) and the Lake Myvatn area are also
nice. Note Myvatn means midges, some you are forewarned and can come
prepared. A fun thing to do is ride an Icelandic horse with its
unique fifth gait, and you also might consider riding a snowmobile on
an ice cap.
