hotels, motels etc while travelling around Europe and the UK. I was told
today at a travel show in Australia that this is the case all time in these
countries.
thanks

For instance in German cities car parking is free in residential areas
outside medieval city centers (where parking is typically not allowed in the
first place). | |

Yes, just avoid staying in town/city centres. If you've got a car why
would you want to?
Outside town/city centres, nearly all hotels provide free parking.

What? In the city centre perhaps, but most hotels on the outskirts of
a city would provide free parking.

In city centres too - you can usually park at meters free between 1800
and 0800.

No, this is nonsense, are they really serious? It depends entirely on
where the hotel is. If you are staying in a hotel in a city centre, then
yes, you can expect to pay for parking. If you stay in a hotel outside
town somewhere in the country and not right next door to some tourist
attraction, the parking is usually free. | |

UK, France, Sweden. From what I remember, other countries too but most
of which I've not been to with a car for 5+ years.

Yes but how central were you?
Like I said, if you're in the centre then hotels may charge for
parking, or not have a car park so you have to find a public one. But
on the outskirts this is rare IME.
I would usually not even consider staying in a city centre if I had a
car.

Precisely . It's a no-brainer, driving to and finding a hotel just off
a city's outer ring road is so much easier that having to drive into
the centre, often a nightmare in itself, find somewhere to park which
may not even be near the hotel, lug the luggage, pay for parking,
worry about the security of your car etc.
Public transport from the suburbs into the centre is usually very good
in Europe.
