edinburgh to istanbul

Hi - I am planning to travel from Edinburgh to Istanbul (starting 1st
September) without flying and spending the minimum amount possible.
Please post your suggestions for places to go, cheap ways of
travelling any part of the journey, and cheap places to stay
(invitations to stay also very welcome if you live anywhere en
route). I want this to be an experience of a lifetime so the quirkier
and further off the beaten track, the better!

I like the idea ... I thought my original plan was challenging, but

Edinburgh (bus) London (bus/ferry/bus) Amsterdam (bus) Berlin (all the
rest by train) Prague - Bratislava - Budapest - Sighisoara - Brasov -
Plovdiv - Istanbul.

Buses are much cheaper than trains in the UK and most of Western
Europe, while trains are cheap, but often slow, in Eastern Europe.

The cheapest places to stay in Western Europe are youth hostels if you
are a solo traveler. Sometimes if you have two or three people, you
can save money by getting a cheap hotel room instead. In Eastern
Europe there's no problem finding cheap hotels or hostels, whichever
you prefer.
