Travel from US to Italy in June

What is the least costly way to travel from the US (East Coast) to Italy in
June. We have a trip planned but the airfares are really high.

I'm tempted to answer "swim," but I really don't understand the question.
Are there any answers other than airplanes? I don't thing there are any
passenger boats doing the trip, and if there were, they would undoubtedly be
more expensive, and take much longer.
