Whats the best way to deal with this, these days, and avoid as many
conversion fees as possible... stilll travellers cheques ? or what
about Cirrus ? What about a lump sum transfer to an account in the
destination country UK ?

Or does it all end up costing the same in the long run ??

Yes, it is very much dependent on provider. One of my banks charges no
fees at all, one (US-based) charges $3.00 per transaction.
Both give excellent rates - 1% over market. Neither one charges for
inquiries or failed transactions.

The best way to deal with this is finding a friend or acqaintance in
the UK who wants to change pounds into your currency (dollars?), and
take the money in cash.
