Call your bank and one or two others. I always get a supply of Euros prior
to going to Europe, and then pick up more from the ATM machines. Call Wells
Fargo, but arrange to go to the bank to pick up the money instead of having
them send it to a bank near you. They charge about $6.50 for that
convenience.

Would not a decent bank simply supply foreign currency over the
counter. In the uk you sipmly walk into a bank, travel agency or or a
main post office.

Don't be daft, we're talking about the USA, finacial and economic hub of
the world.

Normally the US is different. The rest of the world does not exist.
One can have problems exchanging euros at any old bank near the local
mall.

The request was for high domination Euros. The Euro bills go up to
500, which one can get in Europe for purposes of carting around,
100s are normally encountered but 50s are usually the highest
one will deal with from ATM machines in France.

In LA I would try a foreign bank like BNP Paribas Los Angeles. 725 Figueroa
Street, Suite 2090 Los Angeles, CA 90017 Tel.: (213) 488-9120 Fax: (213)
488-9602 ...

Next HSBC has a number of offices in the LA area, give them a call

HSBC - 4.9 miles SE - 4815 Whittier Blvd, Los Angeles, 90022 - (323)
265-4699
HSBC - 5.4 miles S - 7000 Pacific Blvd, Huntington Park, 90255 - (323)
582-1927
HSBC - 12 miles NE - 1107 S Baldwin Ave, Arcadia, 91007 - (626) 447-5084

***

Historically I dealt with BNP in San Francisco in setting up an account
in France. It worked OK. But with ATMs having a foreign bank account
is less needed by many. It is necessary for larger transactions, like
an apartment or house purchase in a foreign country. But our friends
who come for months to Europe just use ATMs. Really living here
requires a real bank account.

So just think up the name of a foreign bank, google it plus Los Angeles
and you will get phone numbers.

Some of the banks will have small packets of euros for sale in order
for you to have cash euros on arrival. Some people feel more secure
in having some money on them on arrival and not having to look
for an ATM machine in the airport (which sometimes has a line of
people having just arrived using it). But I think you will have
more problems in getting 10, 500 euro notes for whatever reason.
Also, the problem of having more than $10,000 equivalent on you
leaving is having to declare it to the American authorities.

US airports have a pretty poor exchange rate on AMEX traveller checks too.

Gee, you're funny! Here's how it works: a bank denotes certain of their
branch banks as dealing in Euros. Not all branch banks will have Euros, but
several located around the city will handle the transactions. Small branch
banks located in grocery stores, for example, most likely will not carry a
full range of services. But, all he has to do is call his bank and find out
which of the branches sell/buy Euros. If he does not want to travel to the
specific branch, his local branch will have the money sent over for a fee,
usually about $6.50, and he can pick them up the next day.

If you are paying for something in euro, and can use a wire transfer,
contact one of the foreign exchange companies that specialize in such
foreign transfers.

If you really need large euro notes, call the 4 or 5 largest bank
companies in your area and get price and availability. Also ehcek
with Euro based bank companies.

you may have to pay a premium for €500 notes.
