Default Trip to Southern Italy

Hello, my name is Rohit Prakash, and I am coming to visit Southern
Italy in the early part of November. There are four of us travelling,
and I was hoping to get some advice in regard to things to do and
accomodations. We are all in our mid 20s. Tentatively, we will be
arriving in Rome on November 3, and will be returning from Rome on the
12th. Although we look forward to seeing that city, I personally am
looking forward to coming down the coast, and seeing some non-touristy
type things. We are very interested in nature, and seeing the sights.

In particular, as far as accomodations, we favor everything but hotels.
I have noticed a lot of bed and breakfast places. Also, if there are
places that offer half pensions, that is good. Our budget is not huge,
so please keep that in mind :)

Thanks in advance for your help. I look forward to hearing from all of
you.

Cheers
rohit

Default Trip to Southern Italy

Hey guys,

Still need some more advice. Right now, we are thinking of being in
rome from nov 3-6 and then leaving the 6th morning to sorrento. Are
there some places we should see on the way? then we plan to stay in the
amalfi coast region from 6-10/11 back to rome for our return.

love suggestions on accomodations and on things to do (i.e. hiking,
eating, wine tours)
anything and everything is appreciated.

thanks
rohit

I tend to agree with Barbara about Matera, interesting if you have the time.
We made this trip a few years ago. Drove east from Salerno on the A3 to
Potenza (don't bother going into the city) then continued on the secondary
roads going through Gravina in Puglia, Altamura, Santeramo in Colle, Gioia
in Colle, then to Alberobello.
Took us most of the day, and we got lost several times, but it was a very
interesting drive. We stayed in Alberobello overnight, then explored the
town the following morning. It's interesting, but not worth more than one
day's visit. If you are in that area, the Castel del Monte is worth a side
trip. If time permits, Lecce is also quite interesting. I would
definitely go back for another visit to that region.
I'd also avoid Bari and Brindisi..
Sounds like a good trip, good luck on your planning...
