Default Disneyland Good Neighbor Hotel Advice

We make an annual pilgramige to WDW (and will do so again in June), but
this is a special year as my wife turns 50 and we are celebrating our 25th
anniversary... So, I am planning a surprise trip to Walt's original in
Calif. for October.

Can anyone give me a recommendation / advice for a good neighbor hotel?

My travel agent recommends the HoJo, Candy Cane Inn, and # 1 the Carousel
Inn. I want to do the right thing, help!

(Sorry, i looked at the on property hotels as my first choice and just
can't swing this... Disneyland needs some value / moderate resorts!)

I stayed at the HoJo one year. It was nice enough that I had no complaints.
I remember the room being a decent size.
It is not directly across the street from Disneyland though. I would
recommend getting the shuttle pass. The first day I just walked, but after
spending all day on my feet, I did not look forward to the walk back. The
second day, I got a shuttle pass.
