Agree. I've mentioned here a couple times that I discussed
this once with cast members at WDW. They told me the original
monorail turned out to cost lots more to put each pylon in
that originally estimated. Disney hasn't been willing to
spend the money an extension would cost.

Is there a verifiable source to a story that when the monorail was being
built a newly constructed pylon sank below the surface of the ground? - Bill

At about $1.5 Million per mile, where's the profit?

First I've heard that story.

Considering how much they spend on new busses, repair on old busses,
gas and bus drivers, it would seem to me that it would at least even
out over the years, if not be a better investment than busses. But I'm
sure that if it was going to be a real money saver, Disney would have
done it years ago.

Oh? Did they develop monorail trains that would last forever without
periodic maintainence when I wasn't looking? I thought Disney's monorail
trains used rubber tires to propel themselves along the concrete rail,
thus needing periodic replacement due to tread wear. Then there would be
wear on the electrical contacts and the rail they would slide on and
possibly brushes in the electrical motors. There would also be wear on
the seating and door mechanisms. They might be able to move more
passengers per driver, but the complications of monorail
switches/turnouts would make it difficult to shift vehicles between
routes when adjusting to varying demand levels.

That was original cost. I believe it's higher these days, MUCH
higher.

UL. The truth is, the ground under a stretch between TTC and Epcot
was so soft they had to sink pilings about 100 feet into the ground.

Not quite. In 1978, it cost the Souther Pacific approximately $1M a
mile to build a conventional railroad. Now that did include
aqucisition of ROW, but still.
The best guess I've heard in a whle came from "Mad Max" Goldblatt,
who, in about 1984, presented a plan to the Dallas city council, to
build a monorail between Plano and downtown Dallas at a cost of about
$3M a mile, using existing ROW down Central Distressway.
I suspect the number is now closer to $5M.
