Ok, I'll take the questions in order. You can check in at any time of the
day or night. If you arrive early in the day and there is no available site
you may not get a site assigned. But you can park in the day lot (next to
the Reception outpost) and enjoy all the benefits of resort guest (including
resort IDs and such). Actually there is no barricade at the parking lot so
anyone can park at the Outpost and ride a bike into the campground. If you
are not a resort guest there is a visitors lot (the far end of the lot from
the Outpost).
Best tent sites are in one of two loops. The 1500 loop is next the Meadows
Recreation center. Or the 2000 loop is a bit further out and away from
things, but much quieter. Either one is easy to get to and from, either by
the internal bus or by bike. Personally I like the 2000 loop and ride my
bike to breakfast which is about the furthest distance by road from my site.
Maybe a 10 min ride.
Many of us bring our own bikes. I have never even had a questioning look
when I arrive with my bike on the back of my car. Bring a bike lock. I have
never had a problem but there have been a few reports of bikes going missing
either at the trading posts or from the sites. Also bring a VERY bright
headlight. Many of the sidewalks and bike lanes are VERY dark. The paving
and thick underbrush seems to soak up most light and even a light good
enough to see on your road at home will barely let you find the sidewalk at
FtW. There are bike racks at most of the places you would want to go.
Several are spread around the Settlement (marina area). A couple in front of
the Meadows Trading Post and a couple by the pool area. There are even
several on each side of the Campfire outdoor theatre. The only time Security
gets upset is when a bike is locked to an inapropriate item (like a fence)
in one of the general public areas (like the trading posts) At your site
there are plenty of trees to lock to if your cable or chain is long enough.
Don't know about crowd levels. But I would expect the crowds to be
relatively light.
