For the same reason some people prefer dramas to documentaries. It's
just personal preference. Some people want to *experience* reality in
their vacations, others want to *escape* reality in their vacations -
and Disney is the ultimate in escapism.

In other words, Disney fans don't view Disney's France pavillion as a
substandard "fake" version of Paris (the realist view); on the
contrary, they actually *prefer* Disney because it's an *idealized*
version of Paris. I guess it all comes down to whether you are an
idealist or realist.

Excellent point. :-)

Actually, I think the original poster is POd at Disney/ABC for the 9/11
movie and may be just lashing out.

But it's still a good question. I've thought about it myself, why the
Disney experience is so polarizing - people either love it or hate it.
And I think it really comes down to a simple question: whether you want
to experience reality or escape it.

See my post above. I was checking out Epcot on the internet then was
suddenly wondering "why?". I have been to those big casinos in Las
Vegas (New York is one of them) and been genuinely disturbed by the
artificialness of it.

While walking down Main Street, a member of our party (and a history
buff) gazed at the mixture of turn-of-the-century architechture, small
town "Main St." charm, and perfect cleanliness. He then said to me "Do
you realize that this represents a time and place which really never
existed?" I had never thought of it that way.

Many of us DO visit the real world as well as Disney. We're well
rounded people with multiple travel interests. I've seen Paris. I've
seen France. I've seen..... (Never mind....) Heck, I've even seen
Beautiful Downtown Burbank.

Then, quite frankly, you shouldn't go to Disneyworld or EPCOT. You seem
to be a "realist" kind of guy. You want to see the real buildings and
meet the real people.
Nothing wrong with that, but you won't be happy in any of the parks.

(Incidently, Disneypeople, are the EPCOT personnel still being brought
in from the actual countries they represent or has that been cut back?)
