Thank you so much for your suggestions, everyone who replied.
Unfortunately, the suggestions are either already booked for the date I
need (looks like I procrastinated too long!) or significantly over our
budget.
One place that isn't yet booked is off-site but on-property (downtown
Disney property, that is): the Hotel Royal Plaza. This place gets raves
on mousesavers and in the Unofficial Guide. Has anybody stayed in a
premier tower suite or the executive tower suite? What were your
experiences? Is it really only a 15 minute drive to MK? How nice are
the rooms? Are there WDW views?
Again, thanks in advance for any and all advice.

| | Guest | Hotel Royal Plaza, WAS: Best Romantic Hotel near WDW? Stayed in a Tower room before the Hurricane and renovation. The room
and bathroom were quite nicely done, but the hallways and main areas
were in need of a redo at that time. The room had an extra seating
area near the balcony. I would think it a good choice for your needs.
Ask for a room facing DTD on an upper floor...you can see the fireworks
at Epcot and MK from those rooms.

| | Guest | Hotel Royal Plaza, WAS: Best Romantic Hotel near WDW? I stayed before the renovations in a standard room and it was very nice.
I would definitely recommend the hotel!

This place looks spiffed up generally following hurricane damage. I
can't comment on the rooms but the pool area is very nice, comfy and
large, and much nicer than the Hilton next door.

| | Guest | Best Romantic Hotel near WDW? Maybe you could stay at a value for part of your stay and at another
resort for the rest of the days. If you can be flexible on your days
and don't mind moving once it might be worth it. Or stay at a cheaper
hotel offsite and then into an on-site resort starting the next night.
Have you tried that with Swan or Dolphin? It sounds like maybe that's
where you originally wanted to stay. Also, keep trying. With 10,000
phone calls a day, you just know that some people are calling to
cancel/postpone/modify their ressies.
