It means: An inclination to one side, as of a ship; a tilt.

intr. & tr.v. list·ed, list·ing, lists

To lean or cause to lean to the side:

The damaged ship listed badly to starboard.
Erosion first listed, then toppled the spruce tree.

.. . . and it probably happens faster on the new ships than
on the older ones. On the older "modern" ships, steering
was done by wheel and it took a certain amount of time for
the wheel to be put hard over, even with hydraulic
acutators. Nowadays, it's all done electronically and a
"hard over" simply happens faster. It's obviously not bad,
since it's better to have passengers fall or slide around
than for a ship to hit something, assuming you must choose
between the two bad things.

Had a similar incident on Century a few years ago. It was three am and
I almost rolled off the bed. A bunch of drawers in the cabin came out.
I took a walk to the public areas and the grand piano was lying on the
floor. All kinds of glass and broken display cases in the stores area.
Broken liquor bottles in the ships store. Went back to bed. In the
morning it had all been cleaned up. Rumored they had to turn to avoid a
fishing boat.
