Last year we pulled in to Castries for one day and took the bus tour to the
other end of the island to the town of Soufriere. We stopped at the
botanical garden which was well worth while if you like that sort of thing
(featured local items like cocoa, etc.). Prices in the gift shop were much
cheaper than in town. We also went to the "drive-in volcano" which wasn't
much. Soufriere is where the twin peaks of the Piton Mountains are located-
very scenic. We returned to Castries by catamaran- very neat trip- rum
drinks included plus a stop at a private beach to swim. Just don't sit at
the back of the canopy over the passenger area (when the captain gunned it,
everyone got a bath when the accumulated rain came off the back). If you
take that bus tour, be sure to use the "facilities" before you leave. First
stop was a store selling local goods (like banana catsup). They charged a
buck to use the restroom. The planned rest stop was a little waterfront
town full of vendors and panhandlers and the restrooms were unbelievably
nasty. It's a pretty island, but very poor. We were told that unemployment
was 27%.
