I have heard the following but can not confirm how accurate.

Puerta Maya Pier destroyed.
International Pier damaged, missing middle section.
Puerta Langosta Pier intact. Buildings adjacent badly damaged.
Panchos Backyard intact.

That was the 2nd hand report from a Coz local who manages his
house in Cozumel. Punta Langosta is where Carlos 'n Charlies
is located. It was also reported that the Punta Langosta
cruise pier was damaged:
*> Waterfront is pretty well destroyed. Ferry pier gone, Punta
*> Langosta pier damaged, most all the small piers MIA. Merida
*> radio is reporting two of the 3 ferries sank.
*> things like palapas etc are gone with the wind. Good news
*> is it sounds like McDs got destroyed. All utility poles
*> are down some phones are working but not many. Airlines are
*> not planning on flights before next weekend.
All in all, the damage seemed more severe than the combined
damages of ALL the hurricanes that hit Cozumel since I started
diving there shortly before hurricane Gilbert in 1988.
I am not expecting Cozumel to be sufficiently repaired for the
Star Princess to stop there next month.

I won't miss it.
The last time I stayed there was shortly after Gilbert (1988) when
hotels in Cozumel were desparately trying to get tourists back.
Several hotels offered very inexpensive weekly rates with a
"100% satisfaction or money back guarantee".
So, we chanced the Presidente. We were first turned off by the
lengthy walks (lugging heavy gears) from the room to the dive
pier. Then the repair crew was banging at repairs at all hours.
That was the last straw. We got our money back (actually El
Presidente placed us at the La Ceiba hotel for the remainder of
our stay).
That worked out fine. We had the La Ceiba shore to do nice
shore dives even though the pier was completely demolished.
At breakfast, we had the entertainment of Mexican architectural
repair crew -- in wheel barrels of sand and concrete, hand-mixed
with small buckets of water, and one worker would spend the rest
of the day repairing one square-foot the pavement.
>From that day on, my wife and I had the term "Mexican architecture"
to characterize ANY shoddy repair work I do at home, with whatever
material I could improvise.
I think the Mexican architects will have their hands full in
weeks to come.

Batteries can be difficult to recharge or find. Water damage.
I'm sure many of us have already run a gamut of similar excuses through
our heads. I've got a lot of faces running through my mind, and I hope
they are doing ok. It's hard just not knowing. There were long lines to
recharge phones and use the working land lines reported last night.
Most folks will be seeing to their primary needs before they spend time
on line to communicate. I hope you find they are ok soon. | |

Hardly. El Prez is no more than 10 minutes from the downtown pier.
You have nothing out there other than the hotel.
May be what you need is to sunbath your pretty self on the Presidente
beach and then have a DM baby sit you while you dive. :-)

LOL! You are REALLY clueless. Ever dived any of the walls in Coz
to 200 fsw? Know any of the experienced DMs on the island? They all
know me and my diving even if they've not dived with me, because they
would hear it from the other DMs on the island with whom I have the
earned privilege of dive as I please.
If you're on my boat, the DM will give YOU the briefing as he does
to other clueless ones like you, "Don't follow him" while pointing
to me. :-)

I wouldn't trade my Large Penthouse House Suite in town (the only
room I stayed on the island since 1995, over my 1,000 dives or so
in Coz since) with ANY suite in the Presidente or any other hotel
in Coz.

You've got a lot to learn about diving in Cozumel, Jay.

We stayed in this hotel on one of our land trips to Cozumel years ago, Jay,
and we really liked it.

Jay, a word to the wise..this algae eater is so full of himself ..Sadly, he
has not yet learned how to even spell correctly. What DM wouldn't remember
someone who is that obnoxious and narcissistic?....He's enough to physic a
woodpecker with all his boasting and outrageous claims..and I don't even see
all his posts! I have his messages blocked and going into my kill file..I
only see them as this one above when they are included in someone's post..
Put him in your kill file as so many of us have..it will make your life much
more pleasant...believe me!

The 10 minutes is the DIVE BOAT ride time to get past the Presidente
from the Aldora Pier. You're 15 years behind time because you have
no idea of the speed of dive boats.
