Upgrade? Lower decks, while more stable, are further away from most shipboard
activities, and so are less expensive. Cabins further forward and/or those
aft likewise are often more costly, while the ones more midship are also
more stable. Some supposed differences are ridiculous... I've been next door
to identical cabins that were at a higher rate.
That said, those are very general statements... CCL usually has 1A cabins
located all the way forward on their lowest pax deck and that is their
lowest category.
Right now I'm booked on a cruise where the ship has FIVE cabins in their
lowest category, 16 in the next one and they are all in the same general
area, on the same deck and AFAIK all were booked as GTY, so I have little
doubt that at least some of us will be "upgraded".
I suspect that a lot of it is about marketing... especially when it's broken
down the way CCL does, and that all Cat 4 cabins (for example) are exactly
the same but by having a letter designation they can look "good" and give
lots of upgrades.
