Default Q? Applying for New Passport Wait time?

My travel partner needs to apply for a new passport. I downloaded the
documents and just need to complete them along with new photos. Anyone
have an idea how backed up the passport offices are processing new
applications? We have our next cruise scheduled for January 15, 2006.

My neighbor just got hers today, she said it only took 4 weeks (she did
not use the expedited service). I believe expedited service costs about
$50 or so, it might be worth it for peace of mind.

Since Len's cruise is 3 months away, I don't think expedited service
is necessary.

Nor I, but you never know. I know people who would obsess about it
every day until it arrived. (For examples of obsessive behavior, one
need look no further than Usenet LOL.)

As I remember, there is a place online where you can check/track the
progress of your passport application. Either that or an 800 number to do
it.

I did (2002), and after an appropriate amount of 'checking' time was told
that our pp's had left in the mail two days prior to my call. They arrived
the next day.

Being able to check on them was a great idea. Some govt employee thought it
up?? ;)
