Clearly the United States is a more significant ship- fastest Trans-Atlantic
crossing ever.
In the 60's I was on a Navy ship in the North Atlantic when radar reported a
surface contact overtaking us at a relative speed of 30 knots. We were
doing 10 knots. In a few minutes the United States went by. She was making
at least 40 knots. | |

| | Guest | SS Norway or SS United States Kind of leaning toward the SSUS. From a historical point of view, I
think the SSUS has been less tampered with. Didn't the Norway get
stretched at one point? And/or have a new penthouse deck added to the
superstructure (It seems like the "lines" of the ship are much different
from the old photos I have of the France.)
Are there ary original rooms, fixtures, or lounges still aboard that
date from the "France" era?

I think you are right about it being BS. There doesn't seem to have
been anything said by NCL since.

I wonder, myself, what they will do with that hull, but I'm with you.
I don't believe she'll ever sail again in any shape or form.

| | Guest | SS Norway or SS United States When I was in the Navy and stationed in Norfolk in the early 80's, the
United States was moored a little ways down from the Naval Station D&S
(destroyer and submarine) piers. I could see the SSUS every morning
from the deck of my ship.
I recall they had an auction or sale of some sort. I think this was
when I was still stationed at Norfolk but it may have been later. They
sold off much of the "stuff" from the SSUS. It was on the local TV
news, showing them selling china and tableware and other items. They
cleaned out a lot of stuff. | |

They did indeed have a giant auction of her stuff. In fact, much of
that is still floating around in one collection or another. Some of
the towels and china which hadn't even been on the ship yet, but had
been in storage, was sold at auction, too.

Well, I don't know then. In the case of both ships, it's kind of a
"Theseus' Ship" proposition.
There are probably not enough vintage ship buffs worldwide to keep
either ship afloat (as you mentioned a few posts down.)

There is a restaurant in Nags Head, NC (on the Outer Banks) called Windmill
Point. It has a SS United States Lounge with what I have heard their radio
ad claim to be the largest collection of SSUS artifacts (largest of what I
can't remember). | |
