| | Guest | Pocket PC - GPS attachment? I'm considering adding GPS to my cruising fun.
I already own a Pocket PC (HP Jornada 547), and I'm currently reviewing the
newest Pocket PC offerings with a view to upgrading.
Can anyone recommend a GPS add-on for Pocket PC that provides accurate
Inside Passage (Vancouver to Hubbard Glacier) and Hawaii / Fanning Island
coverage? Of course, the broader and more comprehensive the coverage the
better.
Thanks in advance,
Steve. | |

| | Guest | Pocket PC - GPS attachment? I say don't get a pocket PC connection, but get one of the stand along hand
held GPS units. If you can do without detailed street maps, many of them
are available for $100 or so, about $200 with North American highway maps
loaded.
This way you don't have to carry two things, or pay for something you don't
need. And, it's great for making the end of the gangway, so that you always
know how to get back to the ship.

| | Guest | Pocket PC - GPS attachment? Why not just a small pocket size GPS Unit with a Map?
Much smaller and waterproof.

| | Guest | Pocket PC - GPS attachment? I got a Pharos attachment a couple of years ago for $250 - it works great.

| | Guest | Pocket PC - GPS attachment? If I was to purchase a stand-alone GPS unit, I would want an adequate
graphical positioning display. Knowing Longtitudal and latitudal
measurements only would bore me to tears.
My ideal unit will inform me graphically where I am relative to land.
With an Inside Passage cruise fast approaching, I want to be able to
glance at my GPS and know exactly where the ship is based on a map
overlay.
Being able to review the total cruise also fascinates me. I always
have questions like "Where did the ship spend the 12 hours between
Juneau and Skagway?
Who has recommendations for stand-alone GPS units / software
satisfying the above wish list?
Keep the posts coming. I'm learning a lot.
Thanks again,
Steve. | |

Steve, your searching for answers in the wrong group. Try
satellite.gps. That's a group I frequent and they have really good
information on GPS. I carried my Handheld GPS with me on both cruises
and it has maps, but be aware that there is not much detail available
for the islands, or while on the water. It's a lot of fun for me.

On many ships you're able to get this information from the onboard TV.
One thing to keep in mind, is that unless you know in advance the
planned route of the ship, and you enter this info into the GPS, the
distance-to-go will be straight line, and can be wildly inaccurate.
On the other hand, I own at least six GPS receivers, so who am I to
talk?

| | Guest | Pocket PC - GPS attachment? Not on e-bay they aren't, they had a legend new with the North and South
America Basemaps sell just before I made that post for $142 (it's suggested
list is $215, so even at full price it's still way below $300), and a Map 76
for $225 (list $321). I would have bid on it if I was a few minutes
earlier. I was totally shocked at how low some of them have been selling
for lately.
It made me think it may be time to upgrade or add on to my Venture.
