| | Guest | Sea sickness medication My husband and I are going on our third cruise this May, on RCI's
Rhapsody of the Seas. Our first two cruises were on Holland America,
where we were pleased to find a wonderous drug called "Sea-Calm," a
chewable sea sickness pill (meclizine HCl). This pill was available
for free at the ship infirmary, and it was a life saver. Can anyone
tell me whether RCI's Rhapsody has this drug available? We would
prefer not to use patches, as we have had bad experiences with them in
the past.
Thanks for any help. | |

| | Guest | Sea sickness medication The original name of the drug was Bonine. It is made by Pfizer. Now that
it has become generic, other companies are coming up with generic
equivalents, some, apparently, with their own names (like Sea-Calm).
If you can't find the generic equivalent, you can find Bonine in your drug
store. It's the same drug. Many drug stores will not stock the generic,
but will carry Bonine.
I agree that it works wonderfully. I also found that it works great when
you fly on planes (at least for me).

I can't help with the meds, DH and I are lucky to never of needed them.
Just wanted to tell you we sailed on the Rhapsody of the Seas in feb and
had some very stormy weather, including hurricane force winds one day.
The ship was extremly stable and didn't rock as much as many other ships
we have been on.

Dramamine non-drowsy is also meclazine IIRC. Try one tablet instead of the
recommended 2 tablets. We find that one is enough.
Some here suggest taking it before you go to bed. Since it's a once a day
tablet, it doesn't matter when you take it. You get the peak concentration
(which also makes you sleepy) in your bloodstream shortly after you take it.
If you take it before sleep, by the next morning, it could still be working,
but not make you sleepy.

| | Guest | Sea sickness medication While rare, my wife gets a little "queasy" with motion, but did not actually
get sick on our first few cruises. Then she starting taking bonine for
several cruises, and not only got drowsy from this non-drowsy formula, but
also nauseous (vomiting, etc.) for one day on every cruise. On the last two
cruises she stopped taking it and had no problems. As it turns out, nausea
is a listed side effect for bonine. Go figure.

| | Guest | Sea sickness medication Before I started cruising, I was scared to death of becoming seasick.
...Just took my 7th. cruise about a month ago. Haven't had to take a
pill yet. ....It seems as long as I keep a few handy in my bag, I'm
OK. Ha... They're probably outdated by now, anyways. ...But they're
still there.. Just in case. ...Jon | |
