What's the drive time if renting at the port, from St. Thomas over to Trunk Bay?
That's it! Thanks.

Drive yourself around ... 18 foot center consoles go for about $220 for the day
.... the channels are well marked ... the seas between the islands are mostly
sheltered and calm ... And you can snorkel anywhere ...
I wanted to do this on my last cruise ...but not being familiar with the waters
I chickened out ... riding around in ferries showed me I should have followed
my first instincts ...
renting a10 foot rubber dinghy and motor in Saint John was the only thing
available without planning ...

From the top...
Trunk Bay is on the island of St. John. It's about 5-10 miles away from the
Island of St. Thomas.
To get there you do the following:
Take a taxi from the ship to the town of Red Hook. Red Hook is on the
eastern end of St. Thomas. It's about a 25 minute ride. Ferries leave on
the hour from Red Hook to Cruz Bay, St. John. The ferry ride takes 20
minutes. Return ferries also leave on the hour. Ferries do not take cars,
only people. So you can't rent a car and take it across the channel.
Once on St. John, it'a about a 5 minute taxi ride to Trunk Bay.

I advise against the car ferry. A better idea is to take the ferry at
Red Hook and rent a jeep on St. John.

All the times I've gone there, I've never seen a car ferry. All I've ever
seen was a flat bed boat taking things (like cars) from one island to the
island. But it's nothing like a ferry. It's a cargo boat that can hold
maybe one car and other freight.
If there really is a car ferry, I haven't seen it.

According to that web link there is. Leaves every hour and costs $40
round trip. I sort of recall seeing a barge with some cars on it.

They call it a ferry ... and that's the transport that is advertised ...
I counted three cars on it last time ... and it seemed full ...

You've seen it ... I'll agree calling it a ferry is pushing it ... I've seen
the same size in the US called ferries also ... but they were crossing a small
river ... and the Rangers are still called a hockey team ...

| | Guest | Drive Time from St. Thomas to St. John We went taxi from St Thomas port to Red Hook Ferry (About a 15 min drive)
then took the ferry over (another 15-20min) and rented a jeep in St John.
The ferry only went each hour on the hour so it may take awhile having to
wait for the next Red Hook Ferry to get over to St John from St Thomas...

Hi,
Already have a mini-van reserved on St. Thomas. So if we decide not
to take the ferry over to St. John to go to Trunk Bay, what's a good
snorkeling location/beach (from personal experience ) ?
Thanks!

You can't make any changes? There are very good beaches on St. Thomas
and some good snorkeling but the ones one St.John are better beaches
and better snorkeling. From personal experience, Sapphire Beach is a
very good beach on St. Thomas. There is snorkeling and water sports
there too.
Be aware that on St. Thomas they drive on the opposite side as we do in
the US.
