| | Guest | Sea Security I have been wondering about this for some time. We all know that there are "Sky
Marshals" and that they may or may not be on my next flight.
I have seen uniformed federal agents (with dogs) while the ship was in port.
But saw them leave prior to the ship shoving off.
Does anyone know if there is any "Sea Marshals"? If so, are they living in the
crew's quarters or "undercover" with the rest of the pax?

They are there. You just don't see them usually. I've seen uniformed CG on
the bridge at sailaway also. They left the ship with the pilot.

| | Guest | Sea Security The cruise lines employ both uniformed and plain-clothes security. In
addition, they have surveillance cameras of many public and restricted
areas.

That's completely preposterous.
Further, what about the times the ship is not under command
-- anchored, or made fast to the shore? It's certainly
not going to be outmaneuvering anything then.

I'm sure there are undercover officers on ships. Carnival was the
first cruise I took that I actually saw uniformed officers walking
around out on deck - not that I wasn't happy they were there...just
kind of took away from the festive atmosphere a bit. That was March of
2002, so only 6 months after the WTC attack.
I don't think I connected the visible guards with terrorist actiivity,
come to think of it. Since it was my first Carnival cruise, and having
never seen guards on the otherlines, I just assumed that it was the
norm and necessary on this line, to keep the legendary partiers in
check :).

Brian,
When we were in Ft. Lauderdale to take our Radiance cruise last January, we
struck up a conversation in the bar with some security people there
especially for the QM2 sailing. They told us there were divers, security in
uniform and undercover. They said that there were many agencies working
together in ways that people could never even imagine.
As we were waiting for the Radiance to depart~~we were late leaving~I saw
the Coast Guard, Broward County Law Enforcement and local law enforcement
circling our ship. They kept all yachts, sailboats and small craft at a
certain distance from the ship~If they even looked as if they might intrude
into that zone, the sirens would go on, lights flashed and sometimes there
was a use of bullhorns as they sped to the offending craft. It was
interesting watching this from our balcony and made me feel very safe,
especially when we knew there were other precautions being taken that we
could not even see!

They are called Gurkha's. Not really sure if they are from the Royal
Nepalese Army. I think most of them come from the British Army.
Not all cruise lines employ them, but RCCI does. | |

| | Guest | Sea Security When the British Empire came apart after WWII, the two Gurkha
formations were split -- one to the British Army (prior to this, there
were no Gurkhas in the British Army; they were all in the Indian Army)
and one stayed in the Indian Army. I am sure there are some in the
Nepalese army now and don't know if the Indian Army maintains its
Gurkha force.
My father who fought along side a Gurkha formation in Italy was in
complete awe of their abilities.
