My ship will port at Grand Cayman on a Saturday which is also Valentine's
Day. I'm trying to figure out if this will be a good thing or a bad thing.
What do you guys think?

I had planned on renting a car that day, but maybe it will be too crowded
for a novice with the steering wheel on the wrong (right) side of the car
driving on the left (wrong) side of the road. Your thoughts?

Pam

When we stopped in Grand Cayman on our cruise a couple of weeks ago, we had a
private tour with BKM. Most of their business is is concierge service to the
wealthy on the island, but they've branched out to doing private tours.

Mindy was great - she gave us ideas based on our group's interests, planned a
picnic lunch for us, and even had a little gift bag for my daughter with
crayons, a coloring book, and some other small toys.

It was one of our top three shore excursion days on a cruise.

I'm sure if you start talking to her now she can help you plan something
romantic away from the maddening crowds!

You can email her at bkm@bkmlimited.com

If anyone would like more information about BKM, just let me know.

We rented a car in Grand Cayman when we were there for a few days.

If you're just going to be there for a few hours on a cruise ship, I
don't think there's much point in doing so.

On the other hand, I don't think we went over 30mph on the whole
island, so you have a lot of time to think about driving -- so it's
pretty easy to do.

We once saw a singer in Bermuda who had a little stand-up bit and
a song 'drive zee moped on the left hand side' -- just keep
humming that.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I emailed Avis on the island. They said
that it was a very busy weekend and that all hotels were at full occupancy.
I guess if I'm going to rent a car, I had better be reserving it soon!

I placed my reservation and I'm renting a car. If I can face Atlanta
traffic any day of the week, I can handle Grand Cayman on Valentine's Day!

The time in Cayman from a cruise ship is usually a fairly short day.
Shorter than your average port time. Plus its not exactly a scenic
island, with interesting natural sites, other than the beach in my
opinion. It is flat and filled with a lot of resorts, vacation condos,
and upscale housing. I thought it was fairly boring driving around
except to take stock of the fact that it is a fairly well off compared
to other Caribbean islands. On a cruise visit you would get more bang
for your time and buck, either snorkeling, going to the beach, or just
shopping near the tender docks, than renting a car.

I was in Grand Cayman a few weeks ago and very much disliked it.
The beach was beautiful, but the people were not freindly at all.
Prices were high and the cruise ship terminal there was a fiasco.
We had a great time in Roatan and Cozumel, but met a several people in
Grand Cayman who seem to dislike tourists and were pretty rude. I'll
avoid going there again.

I would get off the tender and go to the right to Ubanks-wonderful
snorkeling. After all, that is what the Carribean is about.

After or first visit to Grand Cayman I never got off the ship on future
cruises and now my husband doesn`t got off either. We don`t do water
sports nor can we afford the prices in the shops near the port. I also
found the local people to be less than welcoming. Just my opinion and I
realize others love this port.
