Default Formal Night Dress on HAL

Holland America has eased its dress code on formal nights. The official policy
now states that men are encouraged to wear a tuxedo or dark suit, but that this
is not required and men are "welcome" to wear a sports jacket and tie.

some coffee."

What Mason described sounds like formal night on my recent Princess
cruise. It was not official policy but the same nevertheless. And some
of those just wearing sports jackets were even standing in line to get
formal pictures!!! But no jeans yet.

Give them time, Charles~~it seems to be a very casual world out there in too
many ways. I guess the cruise lines will try to make everyone happy by
having a dining room for strictly formal while offering the same menu in
another dining room for those who wish to stay casual in order to make
everyone happy! The day that I see someone in jeans taking a formal photo,
I'll know the world has gone to hell in a handbasket as the saying goes!!

Default Formal Night Dress on HAL

I can recall a time when I was about 4 years old. It was at the airport
in Vancouver, B.C. ... We were just leaving the terminal, but due to
the crowded conditions, my Dad decided to "piggy-back" me. ...From my
new vantage point, I recall looking around at all the people there.
....The one thing that comes to my mind was the fact that about 90% of
all the men I saw, had a trilby on. Two years later, you could have
counted the number of trilbies I saw on my entire vacation, with the
fingers of one hand. ...I guess change is inevitable, but I still
pack and wear my tux for every formal night that I attend. ...Jon

Very true! Kevin wears jean to work most of the time and I wear jeans
everyday. When we go out to eat, most people are also wearing jeans.
Kevin owns one suit, which he uses for weddings and other type affairs.
In the old days he had many suits and sports jackets, but they are no
longer useful for him. I hope that they don't do away with formal nights
on cruises.

When we were on the Veendam a couple years ago, the evening
dress one night was "Jacket requested, tie optional". One of the
fops was wearing a wind breaker in the dining room.

I guess he was technically correct.

I own a tux and a dinner jacket, and generally bring them
on cruises. But, I expect within five years 'formal nights'
will be dead.

To be honest, I am conflicted. If they have formal nights I will wear a
tuxedo. If they did away with formal nights I could live with that too.
I just want to know what dress they expect before the cruise, not
after.

Interestingly, I had to do a google on that to figure out what you were
talking about. I guess it must be a hat not a fish?

I'm kind of a clothes addict, Charles. When we re-built the closet in
our Master Bedroom last year, I dicovered that I owned 120 dress shirts
(the oldest was maybe 7 or 8 years old). Atleast 60 of these shirts were
still in plastic from the cleaners. I own about 7 suits, 12 sport
jackets, and two tuxedo's that all fit perfectly. I won't even touch on
shoes and other garments, cause it's a little embarrassing. I love
formal nights and I tie my own bowties, when I wear them. Nevertheless,
I don't usually bring suits and sport coats on cruises any more; they
take up too much room and it's more fun to wear other things.

Howie
