Default Euro

I don't know how universal it is, but when I was on the Golden Princess,
they had onboard a machine that converted various currencies (US dollars,
Canadian dollars, etc.) to Euros and vice versa. I found this to be
extremely convenient. I don't believe that there was a markup over daily
exchange levels and there was no fee involved. Only paper currency was
exchanged so one had to be aware of how many coins they were carrying
around. If nothing else, they could be used for tips and the credit cards
could be used for large purposes.

fairly good rate. I'd buy from your local bank before leaving and use the
ships exchange for additional currency. BTW: The dollar is not accepted in
most European ports and its value is low versus the Euro.

After getting my credit card bills after returning from the Netherlands,
I discovered Master Card charged me a surcharge, but American Express
did not.

I also discovered today that you can get Euro travelers checks at the
AAA. Their conversion rate was 1.28 which is a bit above the 1.21 that
I found on the web (don't know if that is realistic) but there was no
fee for the checks.
I have an Amewrican Express Optimum or some name like that which is
free to have but gets 2% on conversions.

Save them. The way the dollar is going... your Euro's will probably double
in the next few years.

No, but I would hang onto them. The value of the US dollar has fallen
sharply, about 30 percent, against the Euro this past year.

Actually the dollar gained a lot over 2005 ... the latest sell off is
really only over the past couple of months ... and the currency experts
suggest a rebound ...
