It would have to go to the Wharf... but there is only 1 dock there (though
they're building an extension)... so if there was already a ship there....
no space.
The NCL Spirit which left New York the same day as the Miracle went to
Bermuda instead of it's scheduled itinerary. The Spirit probably took
the only available dock.

Anyone with a lick of sense who books a Caribbean cruise this time of
year should know that there is a high probability that a hurricane
might affect the ship's itinerary.

Life insurance comes to mind. The premium charged is based in part upon
their expectation of how long you will live. Perhaps the cruise lines
have taken the possibility of a hurricane or breakdown into
consideration when pricing the ticket.
That claim has been made in this debate, but prices fluctuate so
widely it's hard to be certain. It appears to me, from a brief glance
at Carnival prices on Orbitz, that price is more correlated with
whether or not school is in session than it is with hurricanes.

It might make cruisers happier if Carnival (and others) said "The
price is $X, and if we have to deviate because of a hurricane the
price will be 80% of $X". Make it clear that the price is lower if,
and only if, there's a hurricane. Bad weather insurance, more or
less.

Yet the cruise lines still sell away, safe in the knowledge that if
there's no storm they win and if there's a storm. . . well they still
win. I see little difference in that and selling a cruise for a ship
they know has mechanical issues and may not be able to deliver what
is promised.
One is a random event with a probability, the other is a known event
with a probability.

BTW- I'm not serious on this subject line- just having some fun.
You should be serious. That is exactly what all good businesses do.
