| | Guest | New Jersey in January We're considering a trip to the Carribean out of New Jersey in
January. The weather there will of course be cold but
what type ocean conditions are typical?
Thanks | |

Unless a cold front just came through sea conditions are no worse in
January than any other time of the year ... They may seem to be with
it cold and dark early ... But times I took my boat out around Sandy
Hook in the winter never felt the seas that different from spring fall
and summer ...
Worst conditions for cruises here were always in the fall when
hurricanes even very far south ... threw some big swells up to this
area ... | |

We did the Explorer out of Cape Liberty this January, Rick, and the
first night was a little rough (we were all the way aft, though). By
the middle of the second day you could enjoy yourself outside, though.
On the way back, we were relaxing on the balcony until the day before we
arrived back in NJ.
Sea conditions were fine.

Actually, (based on our mid February sailing on QM2), by the second day,
it's not that bad out by the pool. At that point you're down by the
Bahamas. Our sailing was a 3 day sailing, one day to the Bahamas, one day
in the Bahamas, and one day back to NYC. Even the first full day, by the
afternoon, you're getting down by the Carolinas... so it's starting to get
mild.
As to seas... it tends to get rough around Cape Hattaras... but then later
it tends to smooth out.

In addition to the weather for the first day or do, I'd also be
concerned about finding my car covered with snow when I
returned. I guess one could get someone to drive you to the pier
instead of leaving your car in the lot.

Bill, you are so right and that is why I do not want to cruise out of
the NY/NJ area in the winter. Our only option other then driving, is to
take a limo service and from South Jersey that is way too expensive.

On one of the early Norwegian Dawn sailings the ship returned to tons
of snow on the ground and they sent the crew out to brush the snow off
all the cars in the parking lot ... since it was just them sailing all
the cars were from that trip ... | |

Interesting, but I wouldn't count on it.

It's too bad the car rental places don't service the pier from
Newark (I know it's not THAT close) since I would be happy to
rent a car near my house (I can actually get a Hertz car at
work) and drop it at the airport, and then pick one up on the
way back, which gets rid of the snow issue. I guess I could just
take a can to and from the airport, or get transfers.
