Thank you to many of you who sent a reply.
Yes, we will have a good bit of luggage as we will be getting
off a 12-day cruise. We thought we might take the
afternoon train from Venice to Rome and use the morning
to walk around Venice and see any sights we might have
missed the night before.

From the several reply messages ... it is sounding as though
it is a difficult task to get from the cruise terminal to the
S. Lucia train station with luggage. Apparently there
are no cars or buses in Venice ... only boat transportation
or by foot.

How then do we move with luggage?

Hope someone can give some insight.

Thanks,
Michelle

At the end of our cruise, I walked off our ship to the area where the
vaperetto (water bus) stop was, the road buses, and our hotel. We
walked down the pier and out of the pier area and over a bridge.

And we were carrying our luggage. But this wouldn't work if you can't
carry your own luggage. I had only a roller bag, a duffle and a
computer bag, and my grandson had a big roller duffle and a backpack.
He was carrying his stuff and my duffle had no problem, but I had to
stop and rest several times. But I was able to do it It did take me
about an hour for what probably should have been a 10 minute walk.

At our hotel we were right next to the vaperetto stop where we could
take it the whole length of Venice. One of the stops was at the
railroad station exit.

I did not go into the train station, and I did not see any taxis or
luggage places at the pier I did see people with luggage wandering
around St. Mark's square. There was also a water bus directly from
the pier to St. Mark's. When we were there they took only cash - no
plastic.

Note: Someone has told me that you need to have the water bus ticket
validated if you decide to go that route
