Pretty soon. It will be interesting to see how the other cruise lines
that still have formal evenings respond. I think the new Carnival
policy is logical. Many are dressing that way already and there are the
airlines new luggage policies which are likely to accelerate the trend.

Nonny, just the Carnival branded cruise ships so far.

I think the only hesitation on part of the other lines will be the revenue
generated by formal night, such as photos, going to martini bars instead of
having a beer, etc.

Why don't they just set up two dining rooms, one with more lax regulations
allowing casual resort, and the other more formal requiring at least a
decent
dark suit or tux?? | |

We checked in for an AA flight to Madrid on Thursday. It was very
slow. I think that is was because only one piece of checked in
luggage was free and that only if it was under 50 lbs. At least
that's what I understood the sign to say. Two pieces checked luggage
maximum per person. Made MUCH slower by the people who had to write
checks for their overweight and over-number bags.
I had all my gear in one checked bag that weighed 34 lbs, plus one
carryon with my computer, camera gear, medicines, travel information
(like maps, flight information etc) and a nightgown which I couldn't
get into my suitcase. I have one long dress and if people mind seeing
that dress again, tough.
My grandson had one checked bag weighing 44 lbs. (it also had my coat
in it), plus a carryon knapsack with all his electronic gear (game,
camera, cell phone, CD player and their chargers and cables). Being
from Miami, the kid never wears anything but shorts, so his mom had to
go to two stores and buy many pairs of jeans and pants to find two or
three that would fit him. And he wears a size 13 man's shoe and I
think he is still growing, so it doesn't pay to get him more than the
minimum. | |

How many times in the past has someone complained about there being
formal nights only to have another poster say you knew the rules and
should have picked a cruise line that does not require formal clothes?
So, if you don't want to feel out of place in a gown, pick a cruise line
that still has formal nights.
Actually, the problem I foresee is the wives will want the cruises with
the formal nights while the husbands will want the cruises with more
relaxed rules. LOL | |

But for there to be a problem, you have to assume that the husbands
actually have any input in the decision (g)

Right now there are other options, but how long will it be before most
other mainstream cruise lines follow Carnival.

Actually, my DH enjoys dressing for formal nights as much as I do. I think
he looks smashing in his tux.
